WHAT IS SMAMUN?
The Saint Mary’s Academy Model United Nations (SMAMUN) society is a student run society at Saint Mary’s Academy. SMAMUN was founded in 2004 by a few ambitious A Level students. It is the second largest MUN body in Pakistan after LUMUN and has hosted 32 highly successful MUN conferences previously in Sept. ’05 , ‘06 and August 07. The conferences boasted strengths of over 100 ,200 and 300 delegates respectively. In addition to hosting conferences SMAMUN sends delegations to the annual LUMUN conference where each year SMAMUN members have won many outstanding diplomacy awards and honorary mentions. In December 2006, SMAMUN became the first affiliate of LUMUN.
SMAMUN is an organization that seeks to provide an original look at the functions and responsibilities of the United Nations. Delegates gain insight into the workings of the United Nations by assuming the roles of UN representatives and by actively participating in the resolution of important global issues. Participants of SMAMUN will interact with other highly motivated college students and work together towards the common goals of international awareness and consensus-building.
SMAMUN is a unique conference that brings together college, school and university students from Rawalpindi and Islamabad (and now Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi), to simulate various organs of the United Nations and other international organizations. Students have the opportunity to act as delegates in one of 10 committees.
In addition, SMAMUN delegates have the opportunity to engage in simulations of international crises on application committees. Delegates are exposed to the fast-paced world of policy decision-making under pressure, as well as key geo-political and military issues.
SMAMUN is dedicated to providing the youth with substantial and more participative understanding of why and how the world works. St. Mary’s Academy will lay host to the third version SMAMUN this August. In the years to follow, cities and universities/colleges will have the honor and responsibility of hosting this grand event. SMAMUN 2008 will be an event to truly look forward to now and remember fondly in retrospect for all times to come.
